Introduction

Traveller and adventurer Carolyn McCarthy has been writing about the Americas since 1998, when she bumped across Bolivia and Argentina by bus. Her fascination for struggles in far-flung locales led her to write about street children in Ecuador, an Amazonian teenager and subsistence ranchers in rural Patagonia. Her work is informed by the natural environment as well as the everyday experience of those who live off the grid and outside of modern norms.

Carolyn divides her time between freelancing, guiding trekking trips in Chile and writing guidebooks. She has contributed to Lonely Planet's Middle of Nowhere anthology, Ecuador & the Galapagos Islands guide, South America on a Shoestring and Central America on a Shoestring, Hiking in Yellowstone & Grand Teton National Parks and Argentina. She has been a contributing editor at South American Explorer and her work has appeared in National Geographic, Sherman's Travel, The Boston Globe, The Toronto Sun and The Salt Lake Tribune. She also is a former Fulbright fellow and a current recipient of a Banff Mountain Centre creative grant.

Carolyn lives in Patagonia where she is working on a book project about the disappearing pioneer landscape. You may contact her directly at carolynmccarthy@hotmail.com.
