Introduction
Service travel writing--concise, useful, memorable and fresh. I write these kinds of pieces for national magazines including Travel & Leisure (Inn of the Month), Men's Journal (Best Mountain Towns in America, 100 Great Adventures), Outside (Best Hikes in America, Toddler-Friendly Resorts, Family Cycling Adventures, Undiscovered National Parks), Walking (Islands With Altitude [Caribbean Islands with great climbing/hiking]), American Way (Vacations that Get You Up Close to the Water), and others.
Literary journalism as travel writing--acutely observed, deeply reported, compellingly told. My general assignment features fall squarely in this tradition, and when I get the chance, I tell travel stories this way as well (a piece for American Way on life, death, and superstition in the Khumbu region of Nepal, for example).
I wrote a popular column for Walking Magazine, which involved travelling and trying out sports while on the road. I mountain biked in Vermont, sculled in Florida, learned to golf in Scotland, swam in Rhode Island, rock climbed and dogsledded in Colorado, and played at a multi-sport resort in Hawaii. I recently spent a week in Costa Rica covering American retirees doing amazing things with their newfound freedom, and hung out in Todos Santos in Baja California, on assignment for Eldr Magazine.
I travel throughout the year, sometimes with my teenage children, sometimes without them. We travel internationally and also do regular road trips throughout the U.S. My youngest's graduation gift will be one of these roadtrips of his own design--we will be driving the length of the Mississippi River, north to south, in the summer of 2008.
Experience & Expertise
I co-authored a standing column in Walking Magazine called "Playing Around," which involved undertaking a sport/activity in an interesting travel destination (eg., I took the first golf lesson of my life in Scotland, went biking in the Napa Valley and drank wine, etc.) I am a contributing author to Fodor's Thirteen Colonies historic travel guide (pub. date July 2003).
